To commemorate the North Carolina golf resort’s centennial, Tom Fazio again leant his talents to Pinehurst in 1996 by designing No. 8. Coalescing all of the elements that make golf at Pinehurst unmistakable into one 18-hole layout, Fazio fashioned a course that’s at once stunning and simple, and equal parts challenge and celebration.

The elevations and contours of the Tahoe site, together with the tall conifers, the wide lake, and the snow-capped mountains, provide a tremendous environment for golf. Some of the holes are wooded, others are wide open; in the more densely wooded areas, we found ravines which added character to those holes. Other holes were routed through rolling elevations, and still others alongside the lake. An open pasture area in the center of the property gave us an opportunity to cluster golf holes amid little streams and creeks that ran through the property.
The course finishes along the shores of Lake Tahoe, where the eighteenth green clings to a narrow peninsula between the lake and lagoon just steps from the rustic clubhouse. Golfers play down the hill from a higher meadow to the lake at the long, par five sixteenth, whose green overlooks Lake Tahoe and the High Sierras beyond, then along a sandy beach beside the shore at the par three 17th where breeze play with club selection. It’s a memorable finish.
The California-Nevada state line crosses one corner of the property where, as it happened, we placed the eighth hole. This gave us the opportunity to build half the eighth green in Nevada, the other half in California so that golfers can putt from one state to the other. It followed, then, that the ninth tee was built in California and the fairway in Nevada, so that golfers can, quite obviously, drive the ball “out of the state.”
