An Experience 100 Years In The Making

Pinehurst #8 Golf Course

To commemorate the North Carolina golf resort’s centennial, Tom Fazio again leant his talents to Pinehurst in 1996 by designing No. 8. Coalescing all of the elements that make golf at Pinehurst unmistakable into one 18-hole layout, Fazio fashioned a course that’s at once stunning and simple, and equal parts challenge and celebration.

Fazio Design, Pinehurst #8, Tom FazioWhen you hear the word Pinehurst, the level of quality and tradition is understood. There was never any suggestion that we create a tournament course to rival Pinehurst # 2, because tradition dictates that most tournaments will be held on that historic Donald Ross course. The new course would serve primarily for guest play and hopefully provide Pinehurst and visiting golfers with an appealing choice of a premier course to play.

Pinehurst has three things that make it ideal for building golf courses — rolling terrain, sandy soils, and tall trees for framing and definition. In addition, it is blessed with one of golf’s best climates. I think one of the early visitors described it as having “a softness in the air” that appeals to everyone.

The Centennial Course was grassed in 1995, and opened in the spring of 1996. It was a memorable opening attended by former President Gerald Ford and Byron Nelson, who joined Robert Dedman in dedicating the course.
