Wade Hampton is laid into the slopes and valleys of the North Carolina mountains near the town of Cashiers, one of the loveliest spots in North America.
The dominant natural feature on the property is a sheer, vertical face called Chimney Top Mountain that ascends from the valley floor and overlooks the golf course. This rocky sentinel is visible from the clubhouse and most of the holes on the homeward nine.

The whole idea at Wade Hampton was to create an atmosphere like many of the old-style golf clubs that are such a rich part of golf’s heritage.

Rather than put the clubhouse on a hill where it would command a spectacular view, William preferred to place the first tee there where it would offer a grand view for the first shot of the round. This allowed us to nestle the clubhouse down near the eighteenth green where people can watch the finish of matches from a comfortable rocking chair on the veranda and feel a closer connection with the game. It’s one of the atmospherics that works very well at Wade Hampton.
